JUNE 2007

Hi!

Last summer, I was fortunate to work with new clients from over twenty states. And this summer looks like it will be equally busy, with singers coming to New York City preparing for upcoming auditions and performances.

NEW MUSICAL AUDITION & PERFORMANCE CLASSES WITH DIANE HARDIN

Well-known Los Angeles acting teacher Diane Hardin comes to town only four times a year. Last April, she and I teamed up for an exciting workshop for kids and teens. I handled the music and singing, and Diane gave valuable acting advice to each performer.

Diane Hardin created Young Actors Space in Los Angeles after a successful acting career. Her weekend intensives and week-long summer acting sessions are in great demand when she comes to New York City. Her list of students includes Leonardo Di Caprio, Jessica Biel, Robin Wright Penn, Hillary Swank, Toby McGuire, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal, Alison Mack (Smallville), Kellie Martin (Mystery Woman) and many others.

Our Musical Audition & Performance Workshops were so well-received (and sold out so quickly) that we’re doing them again this summer. Each workshop consists of TWO classes on consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:30, limited to 12 students.

July 18 & 25 (Kids 9-14)
August 1 & 8 (Teens 15 and up)

Each student should bring a song or two they’ve memorized, with the sheet music. The first week, we’ll work on specific music and performance issues and give professional advice. The second week, we’ll review and possibly work on the second song. Parents are invited in for the final hour to hear the results and ask questions.

Once again, we’ll be at Nola Studios on West 54th Street, and the total fee for the two session workshop is $300. There are only a couple of spots still open. To register, contact me at bob@bobmarks.com.

THE SAVANNAH MUSIC FESTIVAL

This past March, I was in beautiful Savannah, Georgia as a judge for the Savannah Music Festival’s American Traditions Vocal Competition.

I also taught a Master Class in Audition Technique at the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Other judges were John Clanton, director of The U.S. Army Chorus; Bernice Johnson Reagon, composer, lecturer and founder of Sweet Honey in the Rock; Robert Sims, 1999 Oxnard Gold Medalist and acclaimed recitalist; and Mary Wilson, international opera star and educator. We judged an amazing group of talented performers, and awarded a total of $20,000 of prize money. It was an honor to be a part of one of the largest and most diverse music festivals in the southeastern United States.

WORKSHOP IN NEW JERSEY

Just before leaving for Savannah, I conducted a performance and audition workshop for YouthSong, for students of Toni Bilotti Cecere. It was held at Don Bosco Prep, in Ramsey, NJ. I’ll happily be working with Toni’s students once again this summer.

THE VOICE FOUNDATION

I was honored to present a workshop in Philadelphia for The Voice Foundation Symposium: Care of the Professional Voice. The members of this international organization include physicians, speech therapists, voice teachers, and scientists. It is the world’s oldest and leading organization dedicated to voice medicine, science, and education. I’m happy to report that they’ve already asked me back for next year!

YOUNG PRESIDENT'S ORGANIZATION “YOUTH MUSICAL THEATRE SEMINAR”

For the second consecutive year, I was the musical director and host of the cabaret performances for the Young President’s Organization “Youth Musical Theatre Seminar” at the beautiful Sardi’s in midtown Manhattan. Also working with the group was legendary actress, dancer, director and choreographer, Baayork Lee (Chorus Line, King & I, Flower Drum Song, Promises Promises, etc.)

Well, that’s all for now… stay cool!
